Peace and Prosperity Ep.34
▶ Peace and Prosperity of the Korean Peninsula, and ASEAN

The 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit and the 1st Mekong-ROK Summit will take place for three days in Busan starting on November 25th. As ASEAN members are emerging as important countries for South Korea to achieve peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, we sit down with Dr. Marty Natalegawa, former Foreign Minister of Indonesia (2009-2014). He shares his perspectives and advice on how the U.S. and North Korea are handling the denuclearization talks. Indonesia, along with other multiple ASEAN countries, has not only carried out exchanges and cooperation but also established diplomatic relations with South Korea even before Seoul started building diplomatic ties with Pyeongyang. North Korea meanwhile, has been sending its officials to the ASEAN Regional Forum almost every year to prevent itself from being diplomatically isolated! We will learn from the former Foreign Minister about how ASEAN members have started establishing friendship with North Korea, their views on North Korea's denuclearization, and their assessment of the ongoing Washington-Pyeongyang denuclearization talks.

Indonesia is also a pivotal nation for South Korea, where President Moon Jae-in has unveiled his "New Southern Policy" for the first time in 2017. Ever since coming into the office, President Moon has been emphasizing South Korea's cooperation with ASEAN nations on regional security and economy. In this week's special edition of [Peace & Prosperity] with the former Foreign Minister Natalegawa, we find out how Indonesia is evaluating the "New Southern Policy" as one of its core partners, and how the ASEAN members could contribute to achieving peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.
